Land protests and Nazarbayev

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has been ruled by Nursultan Nazarbayev who declared himself as a lifelong president. Nobody has challenged his reign until now although recently Nazarbayev has faced a significant threat to his authoritarian regime and had to take measures.

Reported violations related to freedom of press doubled since 2013, violations of the category ‘assault’ nearly tripled, attacks on editorial offices in 2014 where almost eight times higher than in 2013.
