MOGADISHU, Somalia — A suicide car bomb was detonated at the gates of the Banadir beach restaurant near the Turkish Embassy building in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, on Thursday evening, police have said.
Capt. Mohamed Hussein, a senior Somali police officer, told ArmedPolitics by phone that a huge car bomb went off at the entrance of the restaurant right before gunmen fought their way into in the compound.
After the blast, the gunmen managed to infiltrate the restaurant building and took customers as hostages, according to Hussein. Somali forces have reached the scene, and have engaged in heavy gunfire with the attackers.
Details of the casualties and information on who carried out the attack are sketchy.
