Al Shabaab launches suicide and gun attack on AU military base in Somalia

Al Shabaab Gunmen have on Thursday morning stormed a large Ethiopian troops’ base at Halgan village, some 75 kilometers (46 Miles) south of Beledweyne city, the headquarters of Hiiraan region in central Somalia.

The dawn attack began with a car packed with explosives rammed into the gate of the AU military base, following militants on foot to storm the base compound firing their way onto the ground, a resident told ArmedPolitics by phone.

The resident who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Ethiopian Soldiers in the base fought off the Al Shabaab attack after resisting the armed fighters who entered the base at Halgan area.

Speaking to Andalus Radio, the mouthpiece of Al Shabaab media outlets, the operations spokesperson of the Islamic Extremists Sheikh Abulaziz Abu Musab claimed big victory in the AU military base attack, saying they killed 43 peacekeepers.

He said Al Shabaab fighters have managed to seize the control of the base, after Ethiopian troops fled the area.

However, No independent confirmation of the death toll was immediately available from local residents and AMISOM – African Union mission in Somalia command in Mogadishu.
