Al Shabaab gunmen attack AU peacekeepers’ base in Somalia

MARKO, Somalia — Heavily armed fighters belonging to the Al Qaeda-affiliated Militants of Al Shabaab have launched an overnight massive Attack on African Union military base in Southern Somalia, Residents said on Monday.

Local Residents who did not want to be named, told ArmedPolitics’s correspondent in Mogadishu that fighters on foot have stormed the AU base at Bufow village, located some 6 Kilometers north of the strategic coastal town of Marko in southern Somalia.

The attackers began with nigh-time attack with propelled grenades (RPGs) and bombs before engaging heavy gunfire with the African Union Soldiers at the military outpost.

Al Shabaab Fighters encountered stiff resistance from AMISOM – African Union Mission in Somalia forces and were overpowered during the counter-attack at Bufow base, according to the residents.
